NO SLOWING DOWN FOR SONAC

Since the existing factory was acquired by Sonac’s parent company Darling Ingredients in 2012, the business has gone from strength to strength. Sonac has increased output and invested in the innovation of processes to become a world-leader in the industry. The company, based in Central Goldfields Shire, now runs a 24/7 operation, repurposing animal blood into protein powders for pet food, and animal and aqua-feed industries. Sonac’s products are exported globally, and Darling Ingredients was recently named in the “Top 50 Sustainable Businesses” by Bloomberg.

The location in Maryborough is ideally located in the centre of the Loddon Mallee region. As the business relies heavily on the agriculture industry, the high percentage of farmland along with the excellent access to ports and highways has allowed Sonac to invest strongly in existing relationships and networks in the area. Sonac’s now turning their attention to expansion and more innovation.

By 2025, Sonac has committed to double their production capacity through a $15M investment into a new facility located in the heart of Loddon Mallee. The expansion includes a new wastewater treatment plant that can treat 13 kilolitres per hour, with the recycled water returned to the community for reuse. Overall, the upgrades will enable a greater production capacity, better working conditions, and increased sustainability.

Why Loddon Mallee?

INNOVATION IS AN AVENUE TO GIVE BACK

The future looks bright for Sonac with several innovation projects on their plate. “The region’s not short of capability or technology,” says Simon Cox. “We’re pleased to say our expansion includes a world-class powder handling system and a new wastewater treatment plant being built by Waterform of Bendigo and is world’s best practise in the processing of wastewater.”

“You must walk the talk to build integrity and social licence, and our sustainable and innovative credentials are real and clear. Our goal is to be an Employer of Choice in Maryborough and even though our business is not traditionally appealing, it’s certainly ‘on trend’ by being very sustainable and innovative.”

“We have an excellent group of supporting businesses, particularly in logistics. Local trades and services are available at a lower cost than in capital cities, and response time is always good. For people looking for lifestyle, housing is relatively affordable and everything is here. For businesses, you need people and services and we have a great group of staff, and great support from trades and services in Maryborough and surrounds.”

“We know we cannot stand still and must always improve our product and our customer service. We are always looking for better ways and keen to engage with thought leaders and innovative companies.”
– Simon Cox, Managing Director
